Jubela: Potter has another quote you cited: "My garden is an example of the survival of the fittest." That quote describes my garden. You have to yank out the ones that you don't want, so it's really an editing job. If you've ever grown Lunaria annua in your garden, you'll know that she didn't have to steal it. I stole some honesty yesterday." That's a joke. Joe states heartsease is her favorite flower. Louisa May Alcott, in Little Women writes about heartsease. The name "pansy" is from the French "penser" which means to think. Like most pansies, they have a very sweet little face which I think is why they're also called heartsease. They'll pop up at various places in the garden, very easy to grow. They tend to self-sow, which is how they acquired the name johnny jump up. McDowell: It's a little pansy, the botanical name is Viola tricolor. Jubela: In your presentation at the conference, you mentioned heartsease or johnny jump up. Marta McDowell's 'Zephirine Drouhin' rose. Louisa May Alcott had primroses in her garden. As you know, roses are beautiful and have their share of problems. I do have a long trellis with some old-fashioned climbers. Many of the writers that I have worked with and researched have been great lovers of roses. McDowell: So, I have a garden with sun and shade. What garden inspiration have you gotten from some of the writers you have written about? Jubela: Tell me a little something about your garden. At the Penn State Master Gardener State Conference in Scranton held in September 2022, she presented the talk "The Pen and the Trowel." Afterward, Joan Jubela, Master Gardener from Wayne County, talked to McDowell about her work. She is currently working on her sixth book, which focuses on the role of gardening in murder mysteries. She has published books that explore Emily Dickinson, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Beatrix Potter, as well as a historical overview of landscaping at the White House, All the Presidents' Gardens.
